1. Saheli Plus Oral Contraceptive Pill

This is the most common association with the name. Developed by the CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) in India and manufactured by HLL Lifecare Limited, it is the world's only non-steroidal contraceptive pill. It has been part of India's National Family Planning Programme since 1995.

Active Ingredient: The active molecule is Centchroman (ormeloxifene) 30 mg, a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM).
Mechanism: It works by altering the uterine lining (endometrium), making it unsuitable for implantation of a fertilized egg, without disturbing the natural hormonal balance or suppressing ovulation.
Dosage: The pill is taken twice a week for the first three months, and then once a week from the fourth month onwards.
Benefits: It is free from typical hormonal side effects such as weight gain, nausea, headaches, and mood swings. It is also safe for breastfeeding women and can be beneficial for those with heavy menstrual bleeding.
